Coping with long-term Bell's palsy and Ramsay Hunt Syndrome
Bell's palsy is not an easy diagnosis. Those of you who just got it, and those who already have it for over 1, 5, 10 or even more years will attest to that. Bell's palsy is very hard. It is not only hard physiologically, but it is as equally hard emotionally. Only those who also lost their smile can understand that.
Which is why we wanted to share this video. We want to make sure that you remember that you are not alone on this journey, and that you do not have to pretend to be okay with it, just to make others around you more comfortable.
You need to put yourself first. And it does not matter if you just got facial palsy, or you have been going through it for many years, you need to make sure to prioritize your own wellbeing.
Unfortunately, we cannot help all of you, our clinic has limited resources and possibilities. So with this video, we want to help you to understand, that the best way to fight your fears, frustration and despair, is through the knowledge and understanding of what happened to you and your facial nerve, and why there is still hope for improvement, in most scenarios.

    Здравствуйте. Сегодня утром проснулся и обнаружил, что правая часть губ обездвижена или онемела. Что это может быть? В остальном чувствую себя хорошо. Может это быть из-за того, что отлежал правую сторону?

    I'm 6 weeks into my BP i do have some movement in me eyebrow and i can smirk not a full smile but about 4 days ago I've noticed a weird feeling in my affected side ear like a fluttering or rumbling and it happens pretty often when i talk or laugh or someone talks to me. Is this normal?

    So why isn’t doing the exercises helpful? When athletes have injuries and their muscles are weak they do exercises to strengthen their muscles. isn’t it the same thing or what’s the difference I am on weak 5 and I just found this video. I have been doing exercises but it has been a slow recovery but I do see a little progress (which after watching this video I am not sure if the exercises helped or it was just my body working on its own). Still I am not sure if I worsened it by doing exercises or if I made it better.

    • @CrystalTouchClinic
      @CrystalTouchClinic 7 місяців тому

      That's a good question. Indeed, when a muscle in our body is weak or injured, doing specific exercises can help to recover it. However, in facial palsy (also Bell's palsy and Ramsay Hunt Syndrome), muscles are not injured or impaired in any way. The facial paralysis does not affect muscles. It affects the facial nerve. If an athlete were to injure a nerve instead of a muscle, the recovery would not consist only of exercises. First, it would consist of a recovery period, during which the athlete would be put on rest, and would not be allowed to use the injured area, until the nerve recovers and becomes able to contract and relax the muscle affected again. After which, very specific and well crafted rehabilitation exercises will be given to the athlete to further improve the recovery of the nerve and bring the strength back to the muscle lost during the recovery period during which the athlete cannot use the muscles affected. There will possibly be a lot of other recovery and rehabilitation techniques involved in order to help the athlete recover the damaged nerve. Another important distinction to consider, is that our nerves around our facial muscles are a lot (and I mean significantly a lot) more differentiated and nuances that in other parts of our body. While the nerves in our arms or legs are responsible for contracting big muscles and muscle groups, the nerves in our face are made to contract single muscle fibers, so we could produce extremely finely tuned expressions and communicate using our face. And to answer your question, during the acute phase we do no recommend doing exercises for the same reasons an athlete would not be allowed to use the affected muscle while the nerve is recovering. At best - it would have no effect because the nerve is disconnected from the muscle fibres and cannot contract or relax the muscles. There is a possibility it can affect the complications that may develop at later stages. It does not affect the recovery process, so you did not make it worse. From now, focus on relaxation and gentle massages instead. Be patient. I hope this helps to answer your question. If you need more clarification, please feel free to contact us at info@crystal-touch.nl
